Nikolay was born in Moscow in 1987 into a family of artists.
’26’ Project
Koshelev was inspired to create the project ’26’ after seeing a city wall - smudges of graffiti on old cracked paint resembled an independent work of art that had been destroyed and thereby transformed.
Koshelev has transferred this effect to his own works, with the aesthetics of the destruction of substance and form serving as the overriding principle. In his works the artist uses sheets of aluminium and canvas, containing, elements of graffiti, and depicting surrealistic desert spaces incorporating objects from the urban environment and incidental characters: a drained swimming pool, a basketball hoop, a passer-by, a horseman, and the silhouettes of unfamiliar entities.
Nikolay Koshelev: «We perceive more than 60% of our artistic and historical heritage in a completely different way to the original conceptions of its creators. In the hall of ancient art of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I suddenly realized that everything here had been shaped by the forces of destruction and loss: chipped ceramics, broken busts and sculptures damaged by corrosion and degradation. We will never know how they looked at the time of their creation - now they are different objects, in a different language, one that destroys and at the same time creates something new.» The artist started working on this topic three years ago during his studies for his Mater’s Degree at the New York Academy of Industrial and Applied Arts in 2010, specializing in monumental and decorative art, and graduated with a Master’s Degree from the New York Academy of Art in 2014, specializing as a painter. He is the founder of the non-profit international foundation Dinamika Enterprise for work with young American artists.
Koshelev lives and works in New York.
